True Count
When counting cards in games with multiple decks, the running count does not mean as much. In order to take this into account, when making your decision to increase your bet or vary your strategy (see later articles), you need to calculate what is known as the "true count". The true count is basically a count that takes into account the number of decks remaining and is very easy to calculate. To get the true count you simply divide your running count by the number of decks you estimate remain in the shoe. For example, if you are playing a six deck game, and you are at a count of 8, you look at about how many decks have been discarded. If there are about two decks discarded then four decks remain in the shoe. The true count at this point would be 8 divided by 4 or 2. If four decks have been discarded and you are at a count of 8, the true count would be 8 divided by 2 or 4. So the farther you get into the shoe, the more the count matters. How much to raise your bet by and when to vary your strategy are issues discussed in later articles.
